Raw sewage causes foul odor

Ethekwini Metro trucks delivered the waste.

The foul stench that has been spreading through Tinley Manor, Salt Rock and Sheffield areas was caused by untreated human faeces dumped on a sugarcane farm north of Sheffield.

Aside from the odour, residents have since been complaining about stomach bugs and aggravated sinuses.

The farmer of the plot who did not wish to be named since he had been receiving threats and hate mail, said the faeces was known as night soil and was sometimes used as fertilizer but that there had been a mix up with their delivery.

“We normally use what is known as digestive fertilizers but this time we had a delivery of night soil which we do not ever use because of the smell. The farm is owned by Tongaat Hulett development and I am just a farmer here. It was neither of our faults but this mistake is making us look terrible. We are working tirelessly to fix it and the smell should be gone by Wednesday.”
