‘Fake cops’ rob KwaDukuza man of R40 000

A 40-year-old Ntshawini resident was robbed of R40 000 in the KwaDukuza CBD on Saturday.

According to SAPS Ilembe Cluster spokesperson, constable Sibusiso Khuzwayo, the man was walking down King Shaka Street when he was approached by a woman who asked for directions to the nearest bathrooms.

While he was trying to help her, a car stopped next to him and a man produced a fake police card, telling him he must come with them for questioning regarding the money he was carrying.

“He got into the car and he was instructed to hand over the brown envelope to the so-called police officer, who then asked him to give him and his colleague some privacy to discuss things,” said Khuzwayo.

“They then returned his envelope and drove off. When he opened it, the envelope was filled with newspapers. Police are still investigating.”

Khuzwayo urged residents not to withdraw large amounts of cash.
