Summer camp fun for the holidays at Zinkwazi

Spend your holiday doing all the things you love most.

“Mom, I’m bored,” is a phrase that drives most parents crazy during the long December holidays.

Sugar Bay Camp for Kids at Zinkwazi is a great one-week away option for your children to have non-stop entertainment while learning some important life skills.

The camp’s bookings manager, Ruvika, gives us some more info on this coastal holiday adventure.

Why should parents send their children to Sugar Bay?

Sugar Bay is about teaching children ethics while having fun. We try to help children overcome any difficulties they might face, be it attachment issues, team building problems or low self-confidence.

We teach them responsibility, help them with career choices and teach them techniques to handle bullying.

We always have a ratio of one counselor to every three kids, so that each child really can enjoy individual attention and proper supervision.

This is the lowest ratio in the country, compared to other camps, so parents can rest assured that their children are safe.

We also have CCTV cameras throughout the camp as well as 24-hour security. All counsellors are first aid trained and have a police clearance and we have a nurse at the camp.

With 24-hour supervision, you can rest assured that your child is in safe hands.

What is a day at Sugar Bay like?

It is all fun, fun, fun! Children generally don’t like sleeping in, so they get up at about 6am, have a shower and pack their bags for the day.

  • Breakfast is served at 8am.
  • They then get to choose which of the 101 activities they want to do on the day.
  • Lunch is at about 12.30pm, then some more activities and finally dinner.
  • Giving the children healthy food is high on our priority list, so we always make sure they have fresh fruit available for snacks and with their meals.
  • We have a veggie and herb garden, so all of our salad veggies are homegrown and straight from the soil.

There are endless activities for your child to enjoy, from baking beach-bread to surfing.

Do you cater for children with special needs and dietary requirements?

  • Any child between the ages of 7 and 17 is welcome at Sugar Bay.
  • We will never turn a child away.
  • We ask parents to specify any special requirements and make sure they are met.
  • Our kitchen is not halaal, but we do cater for halaal children.
  • If the child has a carer, he or she is welcome to accompany them.

Do you have any transport services for children who come from say Johannesburg?

We have our own private bus service that travels to and from Sandton in Gauteng. We also offer an airport shuttle service that collects and drops off children at King Shaka International Airport.

What do children usually love the most about Sugar Bay?

Our water slides have been a favorite activity ever since we built them last year.

However, what kids love most about Sugar Bay is really our amazing counsellors who act as positive role models for the children.

We have consistently been told that this is one of the primary reasons children return to Sugar Bay.

The water slides are a fun way to cool down while getting a real adrenaline kick.

Being close to the beach, do you teach the children swim safety?

We do a swim test on the first day. The weak swimmers get a Sugar Bay safety vest so that they are easily identifiable and are always watched by the counsellors.
