Summertime means snake season on the North Coast and our slippery friends are popping up in all sorts of places.

The Courier joined Ndlodlo Reptile Park’s Neville Wolmarans – the king of all things that creep crawl or slither – on a call out to catch a highly venemous Vine Snake (or Twig Snake) in Sheffield.

Wolmarans said they had been attending a lot of call outs of late and with the swings in weather, snakes are gravitating towards houses and even heading indoors due to the cold.

While a healthy respect for – and even fear of snakes is often wise – it is important to recognise that snakes are not ‘out to get you’.

“People tend to panic when they see a snake,” said Wolmarans, “and often it is the poor snake that ends up being killed – though many of them are harmless.”

Wolmarans had previously advised the following steps be taken if you unexpectedly find a snake in your home/office:

  • Keep it in your sight – don’t lose track of where the snake is!
  • If possible take a photo of the snake in order to identify it (Wolmarans will identify pictures sent to him on Whatsapp).
  • Don’t try to handle the snake yourself!
  • Call a professional immediately (they can’t remove a snake a week after you’ve spotted it…)
  • Remember that it is not their objective to remove harmless snakes – as they are a healthy part of the environment.

If you spot a snake that you would like removed, contact Neville Wolmarans at 082 561 4969.

The Ndlodlo Reptile Park is also in the process of setting up a new premises and needs the support of the Dolphin Coast Community, contact Wolmarans if you would like to help them with sponsorships or donations.
