Cash-in-transit robbery foiled in Mandeni, three arrested

Swift action from Mandeni and Sundumbili SAPS members resulted in a foiled cash-in-transit robbery at a Mandeni shopping centre today (Friday).

A 37-year-old man was arrested at the entrance of the premises and was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with 27 live rounds of ammunition.

The remaining suspects sped off in two separate vehicles.

Suspects in the VW Golf managed to flee the scene, while the Chevrolet Aveo headed towards the Gcaleka area in Sundumbili before one of the men alighted the vehicle, dropped a bag and fled into the nearby bushes.

Upon checking the bag, SAPS recovered three unlicensed firearms with 14 live rounds of ammunition.

They continued to search for the suspects and another two were arrested in Sundumbili.

They were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm with 16 live rounds of ammunition.

The Chevrolet vehicle was also seized by the police.

The arrested men will be profiled to see if they are linked to other robberies committed in Mandeni and other areas around KZN.

More arrests are imminent as investigations are still continuing.

All the confiscated firearms will be subjected for ballistic testing to determine if they were used in commission of any other crime in the country.
