Heavy sentence for Groutville brutal murder

One of the two Groutville men arrested for killing Lucky Thobani Hlophe (23) in Groutville last year was recently sentenced to life imprisonment plus five years.

Bongani Mkhize and Sandile Mdakane were arrested after Hlophe’s decomposed body was found in a sugar cane field, with its genitals removed, in March 2016.

The Durban High Court sentence Mkhize to life imprisonment for murder, plus five years for kidnapping Hlophe. Mdakane was found not guilty.

Hlophe’s mother Thembani Ntsoyana said she is happy with the sentence and as a family, they accept the court decision to find Mdakane not guilty.

“According to what we were told in court, Mdakane was forced by Mkhize to kill my son,” said Ntsoyana.

KwaDukuza cluster communication Sibusiso Khuzwayo praised the investigating officers from KwaDukuza SAPS and Umhlali SAPS for working together to ensure that justice was served.
