Seatides substation explodes!

KwaDukuza firefighters were called in to deal with a substation fire in Seatides this morning.

Just before 8am this morning (Monday) residents of Seatides, south of Ballito along the M4, heard an explosion and were shocked to find their substation in flames.

Ward 58 councillor Geoff Pullan told The Courier it was suspected that faulty internal wiring led to the explosion and fire.

“It was not a particularly big explosion and nobody was hurt or anything like that,” said Pullan.

Pullan said they tried calling both Tongaat and Umhlanga Fire Departments but neither could assist as they were already tied up in other emergencies.

“We then called KwaDukuza Fire and they sent a truck down.”

Pullan said he was very grateful to the firefighters who came to put out the blaze.

At this point no illegal connections or the like are suspected as a cause for the substation fire.

According to Pullan the damage is estimated to be in the region of R1 million.

He expected only Seatides to be without power as a result of the fire.
