Waiting for rain at Dunga Primary school

With no water and learning in classrooms with broken windows, the pupils of Dunga Primary School are happy for a photo.

Up in the hills of Mantungwini, 7.9km from Mandeni, you will find Dunga Primary School with no running water and broken windows.

The school teachers and pupils were grateful to receive a Jojo tank from Sunlight on Thursday, however, their joy was dampened by the sad reality that they will have to wait for the rain before they can make use of the tank.

Currently, the school has six tanks, including the newly donated one but all of them are bone dry.

The school depends on the nearby community stand pipe that provides water once or twice a week.

“Our pupils are forced to carry their own drinking water from home and the women who cook the school lunch have to walk to collect water from a standpipe that is far from the school,” said teacher Nelson Mtshali.

Since the school has no running water, the children must use long drop toilets. According to the teachers these pose a danger to the younger pupils, especially the Grade R’s, so they must be accompanied by a teacher at all times.

Sunlight brand manager Justine Angew said the school was awarded the Jojo tank after it received the most votes by Spar customers via the till slips entries at the Mandeni Spar.

The school has 465 pupils and 13 classrooms with some of the classes having 48 pupils in one class and there are 14 teachers.

“We expect the number of pupils to increase next year, especially the Grade R pupils. Therefore we need at least three additional classrooms to ensure that they will not be overcrowded.”

Should you want to help the school fill up their tanks or with donations for the additional classrooms. You can call 081 508 6152 between 8 am and 2.45pm.
