Young rugga star sets his sights on Ireland

Keegan Goosen is hoping he will be able to tour Ireland in September.

A rising rugby talent on the Dolphin Coast, Keegan Goosen (12) is hoping to travel to Ireland after blowing away selectors at a recent seven’s tournament in Durban.

Goosen and his teammates from Umhlali Primary took part in a seven’s tournament with 16 other schools at DHS earlier this month where, unbeknown to the players and parents, selectors were scouting for talented youngsters to send to Ireland.

“I was one of 30 players chosen to go to Dublin and play against some of the clubs there – we will even play in the famous Lansdowne Road Stadium,” said an excited Goosen.

Another of his teammates, Juan van Heerden also made the cut but will not be headed to Ireland.

Goosen, who said his favourite subject is maths, also takes part in cricket, hockey (with Ilembe colours), swimming and cross country; is a straight A student and even won a recent art competition at Curro, showing off his creative side.

“I was playing rugby before I even started school,” boasted Goosen, “My dad taught me.”

An avid Lions supporter, Goosen’s favourite player is Jaco Kriel.

“I like the physical side of rugby and the incredible feeling of being part of a team,” said Goosen, who plays hooker in sevens rugby and flank/eighth man in 15 man rugby. He is also one of the star players for the Dolphins’ Colts team, having earned the player of the year title for two years running.

Keegan Goosen is hoping he will be able to tour Ireland in September.

While the young man has stars in his eyes, the trip comes with a hefty price tag of R45 000 – an unexpected cost the Goosen family could not have planned for.

“I just hope we can send him on this tour, it will be an experience of a lifetime,” said his father, Mark.

“Every little bit helps reduce the amount we have to pay.”
