Ballito’s Natalie Bergstrom clinched the 2017 Quattro ROAG MTB women’s title with a strong second place finish at the aQuelle Harburg Tour de Krantz on Saturday.

Bergstrom needed to finish second or better to deny her competitors even the chance of catching up.

She has been taking part in the series since its inaugural event in 2012, which she won, and has managed a podium finish every year since then.

She was second over the weekend behind a resurgent Bianca Haw with Christie-Leigh Hearder claiming third, both of whom will be disappointed that Bergstrom has closed the door on them. The men’s title was also clinched over the weekend, with Stuart Marais walking away with bragging rights.

“Saturday’s race was super cold,” said Bergstrom.

“Obviously, I was out to finish first or second with my eye on the title, so I am very happy with the result.

“There was not really any added pressure knowing the title was right in front of me – I have always been a naturally competitive person and this race was no different.”

Bergstrom said she was super chuffed with her second ROAG title, not to mention the handy R25 000 prize money.

“I have been winning the veterans category every year, so it was awesome to show the younger ladies that I am still a force to be reckoned with – though they are always pushing me to do better.

“I guess I am like a fine wine – I just get better with age,” she added laughingly.
