Salt Rock footballers play for the ‘love of the game’

Alpha United play on a simple field in Salt Rock where the goals do not have nets.

Sport does not always have to be about winning, playing leagues or earning points – sometimes it is just about sweat, sunshine and camaraderie.

The Courier paid a visit to the run-down little soccer field on Salt Rock Road to get to know a more about the team that residents will have seen practicing at all hours.

Alpha United is an amateur team formed originally by employees of Alpha Security in 2010. Today, says captain Jomo Mabuyakhulu, they accept anyone who wants to play the game.

“We practice here most weekdays, usually starting at 7.30am for 8am,” said Mabuyakhulu.

He said that while they may not yet be participating in any leagues, Alpha United will play against – and accept challenges from – anyone who is interested in a match.

“We do not get a lot of matches but we will play anyone, whether they are in a formal team or even if they just get 11 guys together for an afternoon.”

While Alpha United get together frequently just to enjoy a little fun on the field, they are in need of many things. The field they play on is uneven, has no lines or nets on the goals. Every time a goal is scored the game comes to a halt as someone heads down into the bush to retrieve the ball.

Whether you have proper togs or just old tekkies, soccer is still the beautiful game.

“Obviously we do not expect people to be able to just give us a new field, but there are so many other things the community can help us with. Just nets would go a long way.”

Mabuyakhulu and his teammates play in a motley collection of different shirts; some with togs, others with tatty old shoes. Alpha United could use new kit, togs, soccer balls, nets and – naturally – games against keen soccer players.
