A man accused of being a drug addict and a thief was assaulted and forced into the boot of a car on Ballito Drive in front of the Virgin Active gym on Wednesday afternoon.

According to members of Specialised Rescue Unit (SRU) three or four men in a white Etios came to a sudden stop on Ballito Drive in front of the Virgin Active gym and assaulted their victim before trying to force him into the boot of their car.

“I was driving down Ballito Drive when I saw a group of guys beating another man on the side of the road,” said SRU’s Kyle Meyer.

Meyer stopped to confront them.

“When I got back to them they were trying to force him into the boot of the car.”

The men in question told Meyer that the man they had assaulted was a drug addict who had been stealing from them and was a known criminal.

Meyer, and another member of SRU who had been in the gym, stopped the men and – after hearing their story – told them they could not take the law into their own hands.

They called the police and all those involved were taken back to Umhlali police station for questioning.

According to Umhlali police spokesperson Captain Vinny Pillay the man has been arrested and has been charged as an illegal immigrant.
