Cold night to warm hearts

While most of us snuggle under our warm duvets, Ashton International College‘s senior pupils will be spending Friday night on their rugby field with no more than a sleeping bag and a cardboard box.

This cold night is part of a heart-warming initiative which is headed by the 2017 School SleepOut Ambassador for the CEO initiative, Alexandra “Lexi” Theocharopoulos.

“The goal of this SleepOut is to raise empathy for people who do not have the luxury of a warm bed.

“We are also raising donations for Baby Hope House in Pinetown and La Lucia Baby House, who are in need of baby wipes, disposable newborn and prem nappies, baby formula, dishwashing liquid, bleach, Handy Andy, prem baby clothes and small and medium bin bags,” said Lexi, who is a Form 3 pupil and has always had a soft spot for those in need.

She has been involved in community work for many years, starting off with knitting teddy bears for abused children.

She happened to see the application for the School SleepOut Ambassador in KZN the day before the application opened and took a chance with a last minute application. Much to her surprise, she was the chosen one and said she has already learnt so much from the initiative.

“We did a tour through Johannesburg, from the rundown areas to the wealthy parts, which was a real eye-opener. We visited an abandoned babies home which was so tough to see. These experiences have changed me a lot and have taught me more about myself.”

So far, Lexi has received donations from Pick n Pay and Dischem, but they always need more. A box has been placed at the Ashton reception for donations for this cause.
