UPDATE: iBar Ballito robbed of thousands

An armed robbery took place at the iBar store at the Ballito Lifestyle Centre last Sunday.

About R170 000 in goods were stolen from the iBar store at the Lifestyle Centre during an armed robbery on Sunday.

Six armed men, driving a C-Class, silver Mercedes which is believed to have been involved in other local robberies, held up the store and assaulted two staff members before making off with their loot.

iBar manager Pravin Ramlall said the incident took place at about 10 am.

“The staff reported seeing a silver Mercedes parked outside the store. Six armed men got out of the car and made their way into the store. Luckily there were no customers in the store at the time.

The men hit two of our staff members with their guns and one of the staff was hit over the head. They have both received trauma counselling and are currently on leave,” he said.

Last year February the iBar was broken into along with the MTN shop by robbers driving two Volkswagen Gtis. About R385 000 worth of iPhones were stolen from the iBar.

Recently, there has been a spate of robberies at Durban malls. Southway Mall, Pearls Mall and Atrium Shopping Centre were all robbed in recent weeks.

Lifestyle Centre marketing manager Tessa Woodley said the centre security guards were on high alert.

“This was not something that you would expect to happen in broad daylight but we are thankful that no one was badly hurt.”

Umhlali SAPS captain Vinny Pillay said a photo of the car involved in the robbery was handed over to the police by one of the shoppers.

“A couple noticed something suspicious when they saw the men. They informed the police and took a photo of the vehicle. We are still on the look out for the car with an ND 292-327 registration.”
