A home in Patricia Drive in Ballito was broken into in the early hours of this morning while the holidaymakers inside were fast asleep.

The criminals managed to gain entry into the house by forcing open the sliding door some time before 4am.

A laptop, iPhone and other personal items were stolen and the thieves even managed to get the keys to the victim’s Fortuner, but were only able to drive the vehicle a short distance before crashing into a tree less than 100m from the home and fleeing on foot.

Warrant Officer Vinny Pillay, spokesperson for Umhlali SAPS, told The Courier that the victims were unaware that they had been burgled.

“A neighbour noticed the car crashed into a tree and called Umhlali SAPS.”

“Officers found the victim’s wallet in the car and were able to trace it to the house in question,” said Pillay.

“The car is valued at about R700 000 and the other items stolen at R30 000.”
