A fight in Ballito leaves one man dead

A man was arrested for the alleged murder of a backpackers' resident after a fight.

A man was arrested at a Ballito backpackers for murder on Saturday at about 9.30pm.

According to police, an argument between a resident and another man turned into a physical fight.

“The man kicked the resident and knocked his head against a wall,” said Umhlali Police spokesman warrant officer Vinny Pillay.

“The resident fell and was unconscious. When the ambulance arrived, the resident was certified dead. The assailant was arrested and appeared in the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court.”

The case has been remanded to March 22 and the assailant remains in custody.


Umhlali SAPS attended the following crimes this weekend:

* A house was broken into at Ocean Drive, Ballito on Saturday. Cellphones, handbag, wallet and sunglasses were stolen.

* A decomposed body was found near Nkobongo outside Shakaskraal on Saturday.

* Two men were arrested for rape in Nkobongo on Sunday.

Umhlali SAPS warn residents and holidaymakers not to leave valuable items in their cars when they are going out the beach.

They also urge residents to report crimes against women and children and human trafficking.

Residents who applied for competency certificates and firearm licences must go to the firearm office at the station for collection from Monday to Wednesday before 10am.
