R168 million water project for Maphumulo

Ilembe District Municipality launched its R168 million Balcom and Kwasizabantu regional water supply project in Maphumulo last Thursday.

The three contractors involved in the ambitious project to supply water for wards three, five and six were introduced. They are Afrostructure, Zamanani Projects and Hydrotech Infrastructure.

The project, which includes implementation of bulk pipelines, reservoirs, pump stations, a reticulation network and 1408 yards of tap connections, is expected to be completed by November, and the work in the Kwanombokojwana area, is expected to be completed by October.

Deputy mayor of Ilembe, Dolly Shandu, emphasised that people from KwaNombokojwana, Ngobinjenje, Kwazini, Menyezwayo and Nyonibomvu should benefit in terms of employment. Furthermore, there were about 45 people who had been sent for training in plumbing, carpentry and electricity at Inaca FET College. These people will be given opportunity to work on this project as semi-skilled labourers.

“Women should also be employed. If a man can do it, a woman can also do it,” said Shandu.

One of the people sent for training was Snethemba Ngubane (24) who received a level two certificate after doing a three-months electrical course.

“This is my first certificate and I am so happy. I will hope that I will get a job and further my studies,” said Ngubane.

Residents were urged to take care of their development, not permitting the theft of water pipes and water pumps.
