A fisherman from Ballito on a jetski narrowly escaped tragedy when his engine failed and he started drifting freely in rough seas.

The man launched his jetski from Salmon Bay at Ballito and ran into trouble at around 4pm near the Tongaat River mouth.

“People saw the man fire three emergency flares into the air and immediately alerted local rescue services,” said IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst.

Lifeguards safely towed the man and his jetski to shore at Westbrook Beach.

Specialised Rescue’s Quentin Power said the fisherman was in no real danger and the lifeguards handled the situation well.
