Three Ballito youngsters have dipped their toes into the world of international academia. Stefano Menezes, Carey Whitehead and Pooja Maharaj from Curro Mount Richmore are keen to visit New York for the World Scholar’s Cup tournament of champions next month after the trio of brainiacs excelled in the regional round in Durban recently.
The World Scholar’s Cup brings together students from 82 countries with the aim of not only challenging them to be the best, but to allow children to enjoy learning.
In May this year the three students took part in the regional round of the competition.
The World Scholar’s Cup made a surprise announcement that they would hold a global round in Durban where the trio managed to come third and earn a spot in the tournament of champions at Yale University in New York next month (November 17-21).
“This is a life changing opportunity for us. It is a massive opportunity to see Yale University, talk to professors and network,” Carey gushed.
The only thing holding them back is the cost of getting to New York.
They are appealing to the community to support them with donations to raise the R50 000 plus each student will need to make the trip.
