Julanda Lotriet shares her experience of exercise during pregnancy: I was 34 years of age, pregnant with my first child and decided to do a homebirth.
For that reason, there were strict rules laid out for me by my midwife, one being on an exercise program. I asked a biokineticist to help me with a program, to get me fit and ready for a natural birth.
The programme changes every trimester to accommodate my different levels of pregnancy.
I was in the gym three times a week. My food menu also changed to a very healthy meal option, cutting out coffee, sugar and carbs in my last trimester.
I drank two to three litres of water a day, worked full days until the day before I gave birth. I was extremely healthy, no high blood pressure or high sugar, which can occur during pregnancy.
I felt amazing during my pregnancy. I only gained 7kg in total and lost that within the first week after giving birth.
Hugo was born healthy at 39 weeks after a four hour labour. I had lots of good quality milk and I breast fed for 12 months.
Hugo only needed anti-biotics once and has been in a day-care since he was six months old. I am now six months pregnant with my second baby and it is exactly the same story, hoping to give natural birth again to a healthy baby.
Exercise is a MUST during pregnancy, obviously tailor-made for every individual.
I hope this inspire more moms to look after themselves, because you just feel so much better after the birth!
