The Umhlali Prep mountain biking team are looking forward to the final Spur race this weekend.
The team has grown in leaps and bounds since the sport first started at the school in 2014.
Originally a small group of pupils took part in this exciting extra-curricular activity and by 2016 the interest in riding has grown and committed riders of various age groups rode once a week.
In 2017 the school took riding to the next level by officially recognising it as a school sport.
The sport is now offered three times a week: Tuesday for the juniors and intermediate riders where the focus is on having fun, learning the basic skills and enjoying the outdoors; Wednesday is for the advanced riders where the pace is much faster and the routes more technical and on Fridays riding takes place at Holla Trails and all are welcome.
This year has seen an increased interest in this sport and a firm foundation is being laid for the future of mountain biking at Umhlali Preparatory School.
Nathalie Bergstrom has joined the team and works with riders on Fridays in order to improve their skills and techniques. Currently the team is taking part in the Spur Schools’ Mountain Bike League.
The commitment from riders and parents has been amazing and between 20 and 30 riders have represented the school at each race; the youngest rider being in Grade R and the oldest in Grade 7.
The riders have acquitted themselves well and can be proud of the improvements and achievements they made each week. Nathalie has also been on hand at these events to help and guide the team.
