WATCH: What it means to be a woman

On August 9, 1956, more than 20 000 women from all walks of life marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against legislation aimed at tightening the apartheid government’s control over the movement of black women in urban areas.

Sixty-two years later, we celebrate Women’s Day, and pay homage to the strong women of our nation.

As we celebrate Women’s Month we remember the icons who carried the nation on their backs.

Women’s Month recipes

It’s Women’s Month, so naturally we need a little cocktail every now and then to celebrate. We’ve got two great drinks that combine our favourite feminine characteristics: great spirit, a touch of sweetness and just the right level of sharpness to keep everyone on their toes…

Lady In Red

  1. 50ml Russian Standard Vodka
  2. 8 mint leaves
  3. 30g lime
  4. ½ pink grapefruit
  5. 15g honey
  6. 15ml grenadine

Method:

  • Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice, shake vigorously and strain into a hi-ball glass over ice. Garnish with a sprig of mint.

Girl Power

  1. 45ml Russian Standard Vodka
  2. 15ml of raspberry syrup
  3. 8 mint leaves
  4. 2 small orange wedges
  5. 4 lime wedges
  6. 5 raspberries

Method:

  • Muddle the orange and lime wedges, mint and raspberries in a shaker, include the other ingredients and shake with ice.
  • Strain into a chilled martini glass and garnish with two raspberries.
