Take a trip down memory lane as you flip through the glossy pages of the recently published Umhlali Preparatory School Centenary book, “Here As The Wind Blows The Cane”.
Filled with rich history, the book will take you back in time to the opening of Umhlali Prep one hundred years ago on 11 February 1918, transporting you through the years page by page.
As you read on you will learn more about the founding families, long serving staff members, iconic changes, milestone celebrations and exciting new developments.
“This book has captured the significant events of the school from its opening to the very present moment,” said Principal Astra Russell.
Among the many incredible stories is the remarkable journey of the Ladlau family – four generations from one family all attending the same school.
It was almost 93 years ago that the first member of the Ladlau family, Winston Ian Ladlau, started his schooling at Umhlali Prep.
Since then Winston and his wife Rosemary’s three daughters, along with their grandchildren and now great-grandchildren have all attended the school. Another wonderful story is that of Gladys Starr, who attended Umhlali Prep in 1925.
While she only attended the school for a short period, Gladys’ connection to the school has been a long-standing one. Her three children attended the school as well as her six grandchildren.
“As these pages tell the story of our great heritage, I hope that this book will become a treasured possession and a reminder of our humble beginnings in 1918, “ said Russell.
