Ballito civic centre is ready at last!

The Ballito Civic building in Leonora Drive is finally complete and ready for occupation.

After nearly five years, renovations to the Ballito civic building are complete and it is set to be occupied in the coming week.

The building in Leonora Drive, which has long been an eyesore to the town, was cleared for renovations in 2013 and has since seen a number of delays and escalated costs.

After one of the contractors was dismissed in 2015 and a new contractor was paid to take over the renovations, R2.5 million paid to the previous contractor could not be recovered, forcing KwaDukuza municipality to fork out an additional R3.5 million.

Civil servants who were working out of temporary containers at the Salt Rock office were told that the building would be ready last year.

“The building was to be completed in January 2017.

“There were delays throughout last year and it is a relief that it is finally opening,” said DA Ward 22 councillor, Malcolm Hubner.
The offices will be referred to as the Ballito Civic Building until a name is finalised.

KDM media liaison officer Sipho Mkhize said building control, town planning and the finance department would be relocating from the Salt Rock municipal office to the newly renovated civic building on July 19 and 20. Building plans, development applications and account enquiries and payments should be done at the new venue from July 23.

“The building control, development control, outdoor advertising, spatial planning, environmental management and finance offices will, therefore, be closed for two days.”
