Tributes pour in for legendary photographer Sam Nzima

The photographer, who is famed for taking the iconic image of Hector Pieterson during the 1976 Soweto Uprisings, was 83. His son Thulani Nzima confirmed that his father passed on at a hospital in Mbombela.

The photograph of Hector Pieterson being carried by Mbuyisa Makhubo after being shot was seen around the world and became the symbol of the apartheid struggle. Nzima was put under house arrest after his Pieterson image was published around the world. He spent 19 months at home in Lilydale, Mpumalanga.
