Ilembe R43 million water scheme project launched

No fewer than 16 300 Ndwedwe residents may soon not have to worry about where their next glass of water will come from.

After residents of the area struggled with water shortages for years, Ilembe municipality led by mayor Sduduzo Gumede, has launched a R43 million water scheme refurbishment project that will see old water mains and infrastructure replaced or upgraded.

Many parts of the district face daily water shortages which have largely been blamed on ageing infrastructure that has not been replaced in more than 60 years.

This year, Gumede launched three refurbishment projects, including the recent one in Ndwedwe that will serve wards two, four, five and six.

Ndwedwe Mayor Councillor Vincent Chili, Ugqoloma Consulting Director Qaqambile Ngumbela and Ilembe Mayor Councillor Siduduzo Gumede.

Addressing the community, mayor Gumede said: “The continuous inconsistent water supply in the district has increased the operation and maintenance costs which have led to increased service interruptions and poor service delivery to some areas. This taints the image of the municipality.”

The project that started on March 27, will take at least 13 months to complete, creating about 40 jobs in the district.

One of the residents, Tony Makhaye said having water would be a huge relief for the community.

“We rely on water tankers that do not come every day and we collect water in buckets when it rains,” he said.

Ilembe Municipality requested the public to report vandalism and water leaks to 032-4379371/ 9427 or 087-806 2324/ 2325.
