Police have arrested a second man in connection with the recent Upper Tongaat farm attack, where a 70-year-old woman was gagged and left to die.

The 20-year-old man was detained on Monday in Upper Tongaat, while his alleged partner in crime was brought in last Friday.

The men apparently did not work on the Spioenkop Farm as police originally suspected.

Umhlali SAPS spokesperson captain Vinny Pillay said the man who was arrested on Friday was found in possession of jewellery, shotguns and other things belongings to the farmers.

“Provincial organised crime unit and the Umhlali task team received information that the man fled to Eastern Cape but this has proven untrue.

“We are still searching for the third man and we believe he will be arrested soon.”

Three weeks ago Virathapushanam Govender was tied up and gagged in her bedroom when three men broke into her home on Spioenkop Farm.

Her husband Steve (76) and her, who had lived on the farm for over 40 years together, were held captive while three men ransacked their home.

Steve, who had taken a blow to the head, was able to shout for help the next morning where one of his employees heard him and came to his rescue.

The men face charges of murder and robbery.
