Praying for a school hall at Isnembe Secondary

Isnembe Secondary School pupils praying for a school hall to protect them from the elements.

Isnembe Secondary School in Upper Tongaat turns 90 in August and their birthday wish is their own multi-purpose centre (school hall).

“Our school is in desperate need of a centre for special events, indoor games and examinations. The venue could also be used by our community for basic adult education classes and for workshops when we network with other schools,” said principal Nadeera Bhugwandass. Many school functions are being postponed due to inclement weather conditions.

“So far we have secured a commitment for construction of the steel structure. Any assistance to complete the project will be appreciated.”

The school is a rural mainstream school which serves 586 pupils from a poor community.

“Our school has stood against all odds for 89 years, and was founded in 1928 by indentured labourers who worked on the sugar plantations. Staff and the community have rallied and maintained the property to the best of their ability.”

Some of the school’s achievements include multiple provincial awards including silver at the KZN service excellence awards for 2010- 2011 as well as 2013/2014.

The school was also awarded best mainstream school in our district (from 422 schools) by the Education MEC for Inclusive Education in 2013.

“Ninty years without a school hall is long enough.”
