R100 000 voter party squashed

A proposed R100 000 party planned for the IEC’s voter registration weekend on March 10 and 11 was withdrawn after objection at a special council meeting last week.

Ward six councillor, Tammy Colley said the Democratic Alliance (DA) vehemently opposed the request.

“The address harvesting weekend organized by the IEC seeks to address gaps in the voters roll as determined by the Constitutional Court.

“For KwaDukuza municipality to allocate R100 000 for a stage, music concert sound system, speed fence, public toilets, a marquee, DJ’s and local artists is an insult to both ratepayers and those who are still waiting for basic services to be delivered as this is not a function of local government,” said Colley.

UPDATE: R100 000 voter party to go ahead in controversial circumstances

DA chief whip in Ilembe Malcolm Hubner said the idea of holding a party was ridiculous.

“There is no way an IEC voter registration can be turned into a party to try get the youth to vote, which is why we opposed it and it has been withdrawn.

“The weekend serves a very important function and the DA is promoting the registration weekend as this is the time for people to check that they are registered and specifically to make sure their correct address is on file,” said Hubner.
