The gift of words at Sizani Combined

Reading and writing are two of the most important skills in life and a group of volunteers is making sure no child at Sizani Combined School will go lacking.

The Sizani Tutoring and Reading, or ST*R, ladies are a group of volunteers aiming to open doors for children’s futures by helping them master reading and writing in English.

“It is our aim to improve their skills in these areas so that each child can aspire to a better future,” said ST*R coordinator, Averil Warner.

At present ST*R has about 30 women who volunteer twice a week at Sizani, using the school’s small library as a classroom and dividing the children into small groups so that each can get the personal tutoring necessary for them to acquire these new skills.

“We tutor grade two and three children and the project has been running for five years now,” Warner told the Courier.

The group had a recent boost to their efforts through the donation of a complete set of books for beginner readers.

“We are always happy to have support, but donating a book that is lying around your house is not going to help. We need large donations of the same book so that we can teach large groups of children.”

Warner said they also needed more people to volunteer an hour or two a week to enable them to teach more children.
