Dancing stars go to America

Four young dancing talents from Ballito’s Celia Davis School of Ballet have recently been on point with their performances, with three of them winning American scholarships.

Danielle Fletcher and Thomas Youens, both Ashton International College pupils, received a distinction for their Grade 5 Cecchetti Ballet Exam.

Both of them also qualified to participate in the prestigious Cecchetti KZN Mabel Ryan Award in September 2017.

This is an award ceremony that takes place world-wide in every country where the Cecchetti Method is taught.

In South Africa each province hosts their own Mabel Ryan Award and Danielle was awarded First Runner-Up and Thomas Youens was given a special mention.

Crawford Preparatory North Coast’s Isabella Brown joined Thomas at the Musical Theatre Bootcamp held in Johannesburg, while Crawford’s Olivia Grassie and Robyn Urquhart attended the same Bootcamp in Cape Town.

Guest teachers included dancers from the Joffrey Ballet School in New York.

Auditions were held at both courses, where scholarships were awarded in three main categories: ballet, jazz and contemporary musical theatre.

In Johannesburg, Thomas was awarded the full ballet scholarship and Isabella Brown a half ballet scholarship to attend one full week of the Joffrey Ballet Summer Intensive in New York, in June.

Olivia Grassie was awarded a half Hip-Hop scholarship to attend the Joffrey Summer Intensive in either New York or L.A.

Olivia’s hip-hop training is by Julie Robert of Sugar Dance.
