Three reasons to go crazy about croissants

Warm, flaky, buttery and delicious – croissants are the be all and end all of divine baking excellence.

Made to perfection, these crescent-shaped pastries have been tantalising taste buds for as long as we can remember.

But not only are these marvels delicious, they can be enjoyed in a number of spectacular ways.

Whether you enjoy them sweet or savoury, here are three different ways to enjoy your croissants:

1. Grilled Nutella and cheese croissant

A chocolaty spread meets cream cheese and fresh strawberries all grilled on a buttery croissant!

INGREDIENTS

Butter for grilling
2 croissants, sliced in half
4 tablespoons whipped cream cheese
4 strawberries, sliced
4 tablespoons Nutella spread

PREPARATION

  1. Start by heating a griddle or skillet over medium low heat.
  2. Once the griddle is heated, melt some butter evenly to coat.
  3. Cut your croissants in half and place them cut side down until browned.
  4. Flip them over to grill the other side; adding more butter if necessary.
  5. Once both sides are browned, remove from the griddle and spread the bottom halves of the croissants with 2 tablespoons of whipped cream cheese, then top with 2 sliced strawberries.
  6. Spread 2 tablespoons of Nutella on the top halves of the croissant and place on top of the strawberries.
  7. Return the entire assembled sandwich (bottom side down) to the griddle and grill for about 2-3 minutes allowing everything to melt together. Say Grace and enjoy!

2. Croissant club sandwich

INGREDIENTS

2 avocados, peeled and pitted
1/2 teaspoon garlic salt
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
4 croissants, split
8 slices smoked deli turkey breast
4 slices Swiss cheese
8 slices cooked bacon
8 slices tomato
4 lettuce leaves
4 teaspoons spicy brown mustard, or to taste

PREPARATION

  1. Preheat oven to 175 degrees C.
  2. Mash avocado in a bowl using a fork or potato masher. Stir garlic salt, lemon juice, and oregano into mashed avocado.
  3. Arrange split croissants on a work surface. Place 2 slices turkey on bottom half of each croissant. Layer 1 slice Swiss cheese and 2 bacon slices atop each turkey layer. Place each croissant top over bacon layer. Arrange sandwiches on a baking sheet.
  4. Bake in the preheated oven until cheese is melted, 5 to 7 minutes.
  5. Open each sandwich and place 2 tomato slices and 1 lettuce leaf atop bacon layer. Lightly spread 1 teaspoon mustard and 1/4 the avocado mixture onto each croissant top. Return each top to each sandwich.

 

3. Good ‘ol fashioned croissants 

There is arguably no better way to start the day than digging into a fresh croissant without the fuss of turning the kitchen upside down. Sink your teeth into its plain, buttery flakiness, or simply add a dollop of your favourite jam and enjoy with a good cup of tea or coffee.
