After 5014 arrests and the closure of 218 shabeens and taverns in Ilembe, law enforcement and emergency services were congratulated for a job well done this festive season.

Security companies, emergency services and SAPS were treated like royalty at a stakeholder appreciation event organised by KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu last Thursday. Realising that their line of work requires long hours and sacrifices, Mthembu commended the public servants for their hard work and dedication.

“We pay tribute to the men and women who work under difficult conditions to ensure that there is stability in our community. These officials make life-threatening sacrifices, which go unseen. Unity and cooperation will always rest at the center of our strength if we are to win the fight against crime.

Overwhelmed with emotion, municipal services executive director of community, Cecil Veramuthu said that it meant a lot to be publically recognized.

“This is the first time that we are commended publically for the hard work that we do. We tried as far as possible to minimize accidents, be visible in all wards and we worked under exreme heat and pressure. The job of enforcing the law is a difficult one because people who are intolerant do not want to be told to do the right thing.”

The mayor emphasised the importance of working together with private companies to carry out their mandate.
