The two police officers shot and wounded by two prisoners trying to escape police cells at Inyoni SAPS in Mandeni died in hospital last night.

“Sadly, we report that both SAPS members shot during the escape yesterday evening passed away during the night. There’s no further info on the escapee yet,” Paul Herbst from IPSS Medical Rescue.

“Our deepest sympathy to family, friends and colleagues of the fallen.”

SAPS KZN spokesperson, Major Thulani Zwane said the officers visited the cells at 5.15pm when one of them were reportedly overpowered and his firearm taken.

Zwane said the prisoner shot both officers. One officer fatally wounded one of the prisoners and the other one escaped.

“One of the officers was shot three times in the stomach and airlifted to Netcare Umhlanga Hospital and the other was shot in the face and transported by ambulance to Netcare Alberlito Hospital” said Herbst.
